Owner’s Summary of the Project
My first exposure to a Moke was in Barbados in 1972 when I was in the Military and had the opportunity to fly there from Puerto Rico on a Navy plane. The next time I drove a Moke was 1987 on Martha’s Vineyard when a good friend brought one from Cape Cod for a week long fishing tournament.
When our family began spending summers in Biddeford Pool, Maine which is almost an island in southern Maine, I started looking around for a Moke and in 1997 I was lucky to find one in the Want Advertiser (printed forerunner of Craigslist) outside of Worcester Massachusetts. The owner, who had both a Mini Cooper and a Moke, was given the ultimatum by his wife to sell one of them so that her car could fit into the garage. He reported it was a tough decision, but he was an avid Mini Cooper fan which led him to put the Moke up for sale. It was in very good condition but after 15 years of Maine winters on the coast, the Moke was in need of restoration.
I searched online and found Doug Latham at English Auto in Searsport, Maine who agreed to take on this project. I delivered the car to him in November 2012 and by May 2013 he had completed the restoration. He has kept the photos on his website and is now doing another Moke from Osterville Massachusetts. As we had often used our Moke to take our golf clubs over to the course, I was concerned that they would chip away at the beautiful paint job. To prevent that from happening, Doug was able to bolt 2 golf bag racks to the rear bumper (see final slideshow photos) which has worked perfectly. We are also storing the Moke several miles back from the ocean this winter to get away from the humidity. We look forward to years of summer fun running the Moke around Biddeford Pool, ME.( family photo with grandchildren).
